Position OverviewThe University Press of Kansas Acquisitions Intern will assist UPKs Acquisitions Department. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about scholarly publishing and get hands-on experience in a relaxed but professional work environment.Job Description
25% - Review proposals, evaluate manuscripts, and respond to submissions
25% - Prepare projects for the Editorial, Design, and Production Department and evaluate author-submitted art
25% - Identify peer reviewers for submissions and prepare peer-review documents
10% - Attend in-house and editorial committee meetings
10% - Research potential book ideas and authors
5% - Other duties as assignedRequired Qualifications
- Must be able to work a regular weekly schedule of 10 or more hours between 8am and 5pm, Monday through Friday.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong interest in a career in publishing, as evidenced in application materials.
- 6 months or more work experience in editing and/or publishing or 6 or more credit hours of related coursework.
- A letter of recommendation from faculty.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills as evidenced through coursework and/or work history.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, as demonstrated in application materials.
- Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style , as demonstrated in application materials.
Position RequirementsDuring the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).Employment Conditions(1) Student employees are
not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position.
