Position Description

The Vice Dean for Academic Affairs is accountable directly to the Executive Vice Dean with responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Possess a deep understanding of current trends in medical education and the evolving landscape of academic medicine while also aligning educational goals with the unique healthcare needs in WWAMI and across the nation;
  • Lead ongoing continuous improvement for the UW School of Medicine's educational programs for medical students and health profession degree programs (MEDEX, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Prosthetics and Orthotics, Genetic counseling, Lab medicine, Pathologists' assistant) to include implementation of effective communication mechanisms between and among faculty, students, and staff involved in the educational program;
  • Maintain active affiliation agreements and effective working relationships with affiliated institutions involved with the medical student education program;
  • Maintain Liaison Committee on Medical Education accreditation;
  • Partner with sponsoring UW School of Medicine department-led health professions degree program accreditation;
  • Advise the Executive Vice Dean regarding resources needed to conduct the UW School of Medicine's medical student education program and for health professions degree programs;
  • Supervise the Associate Dean for Admissions, Associate Dean for Curriculum, Associate Dean for Educational Quality Improvement, Assistant Deans of Academic Learning and Technologies and Assistant Dean for Educational Evaluation and Assessment (ALT & assessment is a new unit in AARA). Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and Assistant Dean of the Colleges;
  • Work closely with the Vice Dean for Rural and Regional Affairs providing oversight for all medical student education programs conducted across WWAMI, including oversight of regional programs while advising the Executive Vice Dean about the direction of and needs across WWAMI. The Vice Deans for Academic Affairs and Rural and Regional Affairs will work together to provide primary supervision of Assistant Deans, Foundations Phase, at partner institutions with Foundations Phase medical students and programmatic supervision of the Assistant Clinical Deans in each region and state who oversee Patient Care and Explore and Focus Phases for second, third and fourth year medical students;
  • Oversee the admissions policies and programs for the admission of medical students to the UW School of Medicine;
  • Provide strategic oversight for all activities of curriculum development, curriculum evaluation, curriculum assessment and curriculum improvement for the medical student program;
  • Oversee the activities of the Office of Student Affairs;
  • Oversee the activities of the Colleges;
  • Oversee human resources and budgetary processes for work within the scope of academic affairs;
  • Work with the offices of the School of Medicine Vice Deans for Graduate Medical Education; Research and Graduate Education; Faculty Affairs; Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (Office of Healthcare Equity); and Administration and Finance as necessary to support medical student education and professional degree programs;
  • Co-lead the Faculty Council on Academic Affairs;
  • Upon request, represent the Executive Vice Dean in University and external meetings and discussions; and
  • Other administrative assignments as requested by the Executive Vice Dean.

Faculty Appointment:

This position is a full-time or part-time position that will have a faculty appointment in one of the UWSOM departments appropriate for background and experience. The administrative role is a 0.80 FTE position. This position is not eligible for tenure. This position may or may not have time dedicated to clinical effort. This is a 12-month service period position (July - June) with an anticipated start date in Summer 2025. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position will be $250,000 - $500,004 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications and based on the individual's specialty or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include administrative salary supplement and allowances.

Location:

This position will be based at the Seattle campus with expectation of travel and presence across the WWAMI region.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

Requires a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy degree (or foreign equivalents) with graduate training and board certification in a medical or surgical specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The physician must meet the requirements for a full and unrestricted medical license in Washington state and must meet the requirements for appointment to the faculty.

Work Experience Requirements:

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible related experiences is preferred, of which five years should be senior supervisory and/or management experience as an administrator responsible for medical student educational programs. The individual must have extensive working knowledge of medical education at the medical student level. Prior experience and involvement with the WWAMI program is preferred.
